Why Practice YogaStream?

Yoga… What does that mean to you? Gentle stretching in dim light? Dripping yogis in a room heated to over a hundred degrees, wrapping their ankles behind their heads? A sea of people performing 108 Sun Salutations, following an instructor with a Madonna mic? Yoga in the modern world has exploded into countless variations. It can be quite an odyssey to find the right fit! YogaStream offers a teaching method that is backed by science, research, and anatomical knowledge, yet is also rooted in yoga philosophy, resulting in a practice that is rejuvenating, safe, and—yes, we’re gonna say it!—life-changing. It will align and transform not only your body, but also your mind, your emotions, and your spirit.

Evidence-Based Practice

Developed with Expertise…

The evidence-based YogaStream method was developed by a physical therapist. Practicing better movement patterns and integrating core strength on the yoga mat creates healthier, happier, and optimal movement in daily life, and reduces the chances of injury. We’ve seen the great success of this teaching method with the wide range of people who come to YogaStream: varsity athletes, people recovering from injuries and operations, yogis who have been practicing for decades, people who have never done yoga, international circus acrobats, mothers wanting to reshape their bodies after pregnancy, professional ballet dancers, and those who want to lose weight or gain strength and flexibility. We have a feeling it will work for you, too!

Excellent Teachers

Learn from Well-Qualified Teachers…

Our yoga teachers are all trained in the unique YogaStream methodology, which emphasizes functional anatomy and alignment, creative and intelligent sequencing, and the joy of movement. This insures the highest quality of instruction across the board. Come to any of our teachers’ classes and you will receive consistent messaging that will not only help advance your yoga practice, but also make sure that it is strong and sustainable for a lifetime. Lara Heimann, the founder of YogaStream, teaches nationally and internationally.

Movement and Joy

Movement is medicine…

The science shows it—a few of the many, many benefits of regular, full-range movement include increased muscular strength, better joint flexibility and lubrication, increased energy, stronger bones, better posture, weight loss, decreased stress and pain, and greater happiness. Because movement is also joyful! Why should exercise be called a “workout”? Here at YogaStream, our time on the mat is a “playout”! As adults, many of us have forgotten how to play. Years of the modern sedentary lifestyle often disconnect us from our bodies, and our bodies in response grow stiffer and weaker. We need to relearn what kids know instinctively: our bodies are instruments for our spirits to soar. So come and move with us!

Bring Philosophy into Life

Yoga to Live By…

Yoga is far more than postures on your mat. The very first teaching of yoga philosophy is known as Ahimsa: nonviolence towards all living things. We embody yogic philosophy in the practice of compassion and service, and promote a kind, cruelty-free lifestyle, with reverence and respect for all beings, as well as our beautiful planet that makes life possible. We offer fresh vegan food at our café and our monthly Plant Power vegan potlucks. If you have any questions about a plant-based lifestyle, just ask—we’d be happy to share what we know with you! Our Friday night “Yoga for a Cause” classes are donation-based. Proceeds go to charitable organizations, and YogaStream will match all donations. We love to support all communities, so please contact us.

Emphasis on Alignment

Everything lined up nicely…

Our emphasis on alignment reaches beyond the physical. When you pay attention to the details of a pose and your body within that pose, you inevitably—sometimes unconsciously at the beginning—begin paying more attention to the details of your life and your core values. Whether we are identifying habitual tendencies in movement patterns, thought patterns, emotional patterns, words, or behavior, we aim to better align ourselves in every way, to become the best version of who we are.

Rooted in Science

Science is our foundation…

Our approach is deeply rooted in science, which explains the practices we already know work, thanks to our experiences and the experiences of our students! At YogaStream, you’ll learn about the principles of ground-reaction force, core integration to help breath and movement, and the true magic of neural firing. The concept of the “Stream” is unique to our studio; the second half of our Vinyasa classes revisit, with variations, the sequences of the first half, allowing the neural mapping of your brain and body to imprint even deeper with immediate repetition. Neural firing creates change and transformation!
